Richard Jewell Film
The Richard Jewell film was an eye-opening film for me in the way that false news can be twisted in a way that can destroy lives and reputations. What happened to Richard Jewell was a perfect example of how publicity can always turn against one if it's handled the wrong way. Jewell being a manipulative and easy target to the media was taken advantage of by the media to spread false accusations about Jewell. The short leaded story about Jewell, his investigation by the FBI, and his unawareness of what they were involving him in giving the media a leg on Jewell leading to the spread of fake news. From what I've learned about Jewell's story is how dangerous media attention can be if you're put into the wrong spotlight.
There was no sense of any ethical morality in this story, it was nothing more than a money run regardless of the damage of the situation. This story made me realize how cutthroat the media industry can be regardless of the situation. Even in Jewell's scenario, with not a lot of information about his case, they were still hunting him down. Regarding today's media, I still see very similar stories in the media today with media sites hunting down loose stories without much content and twisting them into their own personas for views. In my opinion, I believe that big media sites should consist of better ethical laws. The negative impact they make on people and society as a whole can be catastrophic and twists the views of the nation.
I've found my own articles twisting information about a topic into an attention-grabbing headline. The first one I came across led off with the title Was it an alien or something? Can't wait to find out! This story was regarding a sick patient in the hospital that wasn't aware of what she had wrong with her and was able to get into the hands of the media. The next article I came across was titled "Was he raised by a family of wolves?" This article had absolutely nothing to do with wolves, it was a story about Bill Nye's childhood life. These articles are a perfect example of the ongoing problem we have today with the media and how false accusations lead to misinterpretation of the public just for views.
